Working alongside state food safety departments, the FSSAI conducts regular inspections, sample testing, and surveillance activities to detect adulteration at manufacturing, distribution, and retail levels.

Recent enforcement actions have become more stringent. Authorities are conducting surprise raids on manufacturing units, warehouses, and retail outlets. Digital platforms and technology are playing an increasing role in combating food adulteration. The FSSAI has launched mobile applications that allow consumers to verify food licenses, report complaints, and access information about food safety standards. QR code-based traceability systems are being implemented to track food products through the supply chain.

Artificial intelligence and blockchain technology are being explored to create transparent supply chains that make it harder for adulterators to operate. Some states have established dedicated food safety helplines and online portals for registering complaints, ensuring faster response times.

The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, provides for strict penalties against food adulteration. Offenders can face imprisonment ranging from six months to life, depending on the severity of the offense. Fines can extend to ten lakh rupees or more. In cases involving grievous injury or death, penalties become even more severe.

Courts have been taking a stronger view of food adulteration cases, recognizing them as crimes against public health. Several high-profile prosecutions have resulted in significant sentences, serving as deterrents to potential violators.

Consumer Awareness and Self-Protection

While regulatory action is essential, consumer vigilance remains a crucial defence against adulterated food. Purchasing from licensed and reputed vendors, checking for FSSAI certification marks, examining packaging integrity, and staying informed about common adulteration practices can help consumers make safer choices.

Reading labels carefully, avoiding suspiciously cheap products, and reporting suspected adulteration through official channels contributes to the collective effort against this menace. Community awareness programmes and educational campaigns are helping spread knowledge about food safety.

The fight against food adulteration requires sustained effort from regulators, industry stakeholders, and consumers alike. While authorities continue strengthening enforcement mechanisms, individual awareness and responsible purchasing decisions remain powerful tools in ensuring food safety for all.
